The Host vs Singapore Dreaming

Both are family centric movies of different languages and culture, and also revolving around a different theme. A mutated gigantic fish in Han river in The Host is the thing that rumble up the Park family, while money, favouritism, friction, love tested the Loh family in Singapore Dreaming.

This movie was a major hit in Korea this year, grossing more than 100% than the 2nd movie in the box office. What makes a typical monster movie so popular ? Monster movie which Hollywood makes tonnes in a year whether is A grade to Z grade. A major difference is the monster in The Host is reveal to the audience very early in the movie, which is unusual in monster type movie where alot of "people will died first" + "alot of people will not believe there is a monster first" + then they will finally realize, "Oh really got monster ah".

The monster appeared early so as to eat up Hyeon-su but apparently only capture her. With this, pandemonium occurred, people near Han River evacuated, a mysterious virus was declared which came from the monster, USA and WHO got involved.

Several scenes was quite deliberately made to shown how KT, incapable and merciless the korean government was. The pace of the movie fasten when the Park family received a call from Hyeon-su, believing she is still alive and so determined to get her out from the monster's den, a sewage. The last scene where the final show down between the Park family and The Host was quite something. It was torched alive and speared to death.

Moment of the movie :
The dimwit narcolepsy son which indirectly caused his Dad's death by miscounting the number of bullets left and telling him there is still a last bullet. Therefore, The Host flung him to death.
The Host gets 7/10 .

Singapore Dreaming, a very local movie largely dialogued in Hokkien revolving around the Loh family. Not the kind of Jack Neo's slap stick + morale of the story kinda of movie. It still have numerous light hearted and funny scenes but a typical and predictable storyline did nothing to the tempo of the movie.

1) Parent dotes and favour the son
2) Incompetent and son
3) Son's gf who devotes her time, money and life to him which he don't appreciate
4) Daugther has a job with a crap boss, with an ex-SAF regular husband lousy at selling insurance
5) Dad died after striking 2 million TOTO
6) Fighting over the money
7) A fair ending I would say

Moment of the movie :
Dad bought Mum a pair of earrings after striking 2 million dollars, ironically he didn't know her ears was not pierced all these years. SG Dreaming gets a 6/10
