二零零八年的最后一天, 大多数人都应该希望今年快点过去, 总的来说, this is not a good year. But before whoever decided to divide time into years, months and days, it probably doesn't matter.

This 2008 shouldn't be that bad if you ....

didn't down all or most of your $ into any minibonds. People started to question when their investments went sour, where most people won't get any $ back. Years back, how many will bet their last dollar that Lehman Brothers will go bankrupt ?

didn't lose all or most of your $ in stock market. The STI is down almost 50% from 2007, worst year on record.

are an iPhone craze. Singtel sells iPhone 3G officially in Singapore, response has been very well.

like the series "Prison Break". It happened in reality in Singapore, minus the complexity in getting out, seemingly MS just walked out or limped out ... to be exact.

are a supporter of Obama, who won the presidency elections of United States. Loads of shit waiting for him, one of this to-do is to close down Guantamono Bay, sources say he will turn it into a bank, that will make it easy to "close down".

or anyone close to you wasn't in Mumbai during the terriorist attack. Something unfortunate, especially for those who lost loved ones. Post-attack reports evidently shows it could be much better dealt with ... not to slam the Ls ... but ... giving benefit of the doubt of the reports.

like Michael Phelps, he won record 8 gold medals. Sources say they are creating more events so that he can win more, like "195.5 metes butterfly".

still have a job. Economies throughout the world are in recession. Singapore didn't escape, finger crossed that we do not get anymore shocking news in 2009.

are a soccer fan that supports Spain. They won the European Cup but can't deny seems that other traditionally strong teams are getting weaker.

are a movie fan. I watched 47 movies this year. Hmmmm ... that many. Some really good ones were Harold and Kumar, Ironman, Kungfu Panda, Don't mess with Zohan, Tropic Thunder, Dark Knight, etc.

are not a die hard fan of "Made in China" food. In 2008, the victims were babies. Six Chinese infants died from kidney failure, while close to 300,000 were hospitalized. One company apologized on Sept. 15, but melamine was an open-secret ingredient in the Chinese food industry, and the panic went global because of the ubiquity of Chinese food exports. Melamine has since been found in animal feed and eggs, and even sex toys.

Saturday Dinner@Canele

Croque Madame is a good combination of ham, cheese and toast with some don't know what spread, mayo like but subtle with potatory taste. It comes in 2 thick toast, the top one melted with Swiss Gruyère cheese and on top of it, is a sunny side up ... It looks good.

Taste wise, equally not bad. The toasts are crisp on the outside, hot and soft inside, with several layers of ham in between ... so it is like sunny side, cheese, toast, ham, spread then toast again. It will make a good breakfast but this as dinner for me was as nice.

Extoique is the dessert.

"Flambéed caramelized banana, chocolate sauce, passionfruit banana sorbet, vanilla tuile and vanilla crème chantilly"

The sorbet wasn't the the norm one, which taste more like ice. This one is really smooth and creamy, passionfruit and banana makes it sour but goes well with the crepe and vanilla cream. The large pieces of tuile are good, crispy and thick enough to taste the crunchiness with vanilla.

Saturday Lunch@わさび て

A very small outlet with only 16 seats in bar like counter, the actual kitchen is just few steps inside but the sashimi, sushi, handroll making are all in front of you. If you come in groups, then probably you have to split into 2s or 3s and of course the waiting part. About 35 mins wait for seats on a Saturday afternoon and also once seated, you must pay $2 but that can be used to order a green tea, soft drinks, etc.

Menu selection is good enough for such a small kitchen and one man cook while another lady do the rest.

I got the BBQ teriyaki salmon set and avocado crabstick 手巻き. The 手巻き was good as the shredded crabstick don't taste like cheapo ones or maybe the other tastes did the cover up.

Pieces of avocados was on top so the first bite was nice and the crunchie roe inside adds more bites.

Each set comes with a appetizer, some beancurd with some black stuff, taste not bad. The salmon set comes with miso, rice and the salmon of course with lots of cabbage on mayo. The salmon took a while to come, but done well, tender not too hard, just enough teriyaki sauce. Just that the top part abit too many "Terry Fox", probably he forgot to turn it. But of course you won't want to ask that guy, he doesn't speak, probably people don't interact with him and he served the food with an attitude, dropping the plates, claypot, crockery, the sound need to be loud, probably that excite him. Wonder what happens if you tell him, his sashimi not fresh ......



Luckily, the good food compensate for that. The $20 ちらし どん is also quite worth it with huge chunks of different type of sashimi over a bed of rice. People who likes sashimi should love this.

Yes Man

The mask man is evidently aged but as he continued to show his ability to contort his facial muscle, it did delight at some parts of the movie. It was a inspirational comedic drama. JC is Carl, some guy who was not sure why he was living his life, especially after he split with his wife.

Then he met a friend, Norman, who was a Yes Man. Someone who believed in some guru guy who makes you want to say Yes to every opportunity that comes along. As usual, it would start badly, as he say his first Yes to a homeless man, fetching him to some park as he used his mobile till batt is dead.

And his car went dead after dropping him, Carl had to walked far to get gas but then it somehow paid off, he saw someone who gave him a ride. Someone he felt that he likes ... then he began his Yes journey. Even at his work, he was approving almost all loans, even peculiar ones for small amounts. This paid off, as he was promoted and then move into the corporate department.

He was back to good terms with his friends and he started learning flying, korean, guitar, even accepting a sexual offer from his old neighbours who was very fond of him since. And he met the girl agan, Allision, someone who he thinks is opposite of him, as she is spontaenous and does alot of different things. They hit it off well and he joined her "morning jog taking blurr pictures" class, went to her gig and went on spontaenous trips.

But since this is a movie, it can't be smooth all the time. He got arrested at the airport with Allison as the officers interrogate him, she found out that he has been saying Yes all the time like following some programme.

It ended well anyway with a slight twist in the end, quite funny. 7/10

Sunday Brunch@Cova

Brought to Singapore by Wingtai, this originated from Milan restaurant, famous for its pastries, chocolate and coffee, probably just in Italy. One thing for sure, it will get an instant approval for being an affiliate of NKF.

有钱有势 people come here or maybe I am wrong but from the looks of people who came after us, either expatriate, rich tai tai, etc. But there is one crouching back uncle who came before us, he might not look evidently top billionaire but rich enough.

Selection is not alot, with some not norm starters/appetizer with salads stuff, the norm. Soup of the day looks good, too bad we didn't order.

The spicy salami panini was a bad choice, the salami was so salty that you can feel that your kidney is failing.

And kept bluffing yourself, it must be the more expensive it is, the more saltish it must be. But it just spoiled your taste bud, as I struggled through.

I was hoping the sacher can save the day.

Saturday Dinner@Waruku

Waruku again !??!?!? Not that its food is so good and I had it few weeks back. Never mind ... I tried what I wanted to try this time round.

The rice and udon/soba combi set. I got the salmon roe rice and cream scallop udon with cheese which comes in bowl size that makes you think you are in midget land !! The salmon roe rice with shredded omelette nothing fantastic but the roe did give some crunch bite when it goes with the rice.

It is the cream cheese udon that taste good, the cream sauce gives just enough creamy taste but not too overwhelming, with a bit slight sweet taste, just abit. With the shredded cheese, it adds some oohmmm to it. Scallops are quite big and fresh because it doesn't give you those "fishy" taste. The thick udon are Q and goes well with the rest.


The starters of BBQ squid and Potato Mentai with cheese. The latter is a must mention, comes in a small hotplate, piping hot and it is starchy, cheesy and you get to taste the potato with some crunch, probably from the mentai. The BBQ squid is abit tough, but it is abit better after it gets heated up under the fire.



My friend tried the beef paper pot set, same as the one that I had last time but his is a set and also the miso soup base he chosen. The miso soup base is full of soya sauce and some herbal taste, makes it abit different but nice.


The tempura ice cream dessert is like fried ice cream but the outer pastry like crust has a creamy smell and taste. The mini ice creams are average but it comes in bite size flavours.

Friday Dinner@Cafe Cartel

Cafe cartel is democratically chosen. Nothing to boast about this eating place as it become mass appeal during the past few years. I remember one of the earliest outlet is just outside Raffles City main entrance.

And their so called popular ribs is now slashed price, after they increase the price quite a while back. Over time, they changed their menu quite a bit. Both selection wise and physical appeal wise.

But one thing didn't change, almost quite hard to finish one ribs yourself. Abit too much, so I swapped some with my friend's crispy ribs, something new. The cripsy ribs got some spices taste, abit too oily but taste okay, but probably you can't finish it alone as well with 4 big pieces.

叶问

电影取自于咏春一代宗师, 叶问在佛山的事迹. 现在这种角色没几人能够演了, 非甄子丹莫属. 故事上, 到底多少是真实或是取材, 就不知道. 不过那不重要, 看甄子丹的戏, 都是为了看精彩的打斗. 这方面叶问还算不错, 武打场面虽不是拍案叫绝. 武术指导是洪金宝, 还请了叶问的儿子, 叶春当顾问.
故事描述到193x 年的佛山, 那时经济蓬勃, 大家都过着好日子. 在短短日子里, 来了很多自称是高手的人来开武馆. 过了不久, 来了个金山找, 打败了武馆街的师傅们. 最终去挑战叶问. 叶问轻易的就打败了他. 就因这件事, 叶问越来越受欢迎, 百人前来拜他为师.

但是, 日本侵略中国, 佛山沦陷. 叶问一家三口也难逃劫数, 没一餐饱饭.他在矿厂找到工作, 过了不久发现日本的三浦将军在找中国人跟日本兵比武, 赢的能得到一包米. 叶问的朋友, 武痴林在比试中本来能知难而进,不过他对日本人侵略时愤怒不已, 偷袭三浦, 而被他打死.

叶问为了找武痴林, 也去比试. 又亲眼目睹有一同胞, 廖师傅被枪毙. 叶问一敌十, 易如反掌地打败了日本人, 看到了他招招显示出他多么恨日本人. 最终叶问在擂台上打死了三浦, 他的手下看到三浦倒下就开了枪. 叶问受了伤, 但得好友相助, 一家人逃到了香港.

叶问的另一买点可能是他就是李小龙的师傅. 7/10

十二月十五日, 星期一, 雨

It wasn‘t such a bad weekend till last night when I had to go back to office to resolve some problem. I had a good swim on Saturday then dinner CS sakae teppanyaki. Then managed to stay awake to watch Spurs drew 0-0 with Man U while playing RTK.

So today was a work from home monday, though wanted to zzZZzzz as slept at about 4+. Woke up before 10, washed up, checked my emails and settled some priority items. Then got my coffee and continue my work while watching 珠光宝气.

Later, I finally watched 保持通话, the hong kong version of cellular. Movie was not bad with enough action but somehow 大S and one bad guy need to communicate in chinese, while 古天乐 and 张家辉 in cantonese. It sounded like either they can understand both languages perfectly well but cannot converse in it. And thus, it was like they already knew what to say ... in actual they knew since they memorized the scripts. 7/10

I am watching mirrors now. Till now, it was still good. Horror, blood, gore, mystery and thrill. About Ben a cop suspended, got a nighttime work in a department store destroyed by fire. Then he soon found wierd things happening if there are mirrors around, then it became scary and people started to die in quite innovative fashion, especially his sister. It was like with a reflection, it can take control of anyone and what it does becomes real to the person. Then the evil force started to target his divorced wife and children.

He found out that the store was previously a mental hospital who experimented in treating schizophrenia and a mass killing happened in 1952. It came down to a name, Anna Esseker, a 12 year old female patient thought to be dead. She was a patient subject for Dr Kane who believed that she had schizophrenia and treated her in a closed room full of mirrors while restraining her in a seat. Apparently, it was something else that caused Anna's problem, and it went out of her body and into the mirrors.

Over the years, the evil force seems to be getting more powerful and as it threatens to kill his whole family, Ben try to get Anna for help and she did came back to face the demon. It was a final showndown between Ben and the repossessed Anna. And there is a little twist at the end. 8/10

The Day the Earth Stood Still

This is a remake of the 1951 film but surprisingly I quite like it. With enough action and CGI to keep the adrenalin going ... or maybe my expectation wasn't that high. Movie started on "Keropok" mountain in india, couldn't remember the mountain name, should be close. KR was there camping for the night, and encountered the alien which merely took a DNA/skin sample of him.

Then came back to present, Connelly as Dr Helen Bensen was some don't know what gist and was urgently brought into some facility with a room of full of other experts. They were told something was crashing onto earth in 78 mins. And with the speed the thing was coming at earth, it was impossible to stop it, they were brought there to do the "Aftermath".

The thing landed. Humungus sphere like object landed on Central park. Army, police, airforce and the team of experts arrived. Something walked out, and some KT shot the thing and seemingly wounded. Then another thing came out, a robotic creature indestructible and electronically disabled all their equipments. The wounded alien told the robot to stop and it was brought back to the facility for treatment.

The alien was Klaatu, send here to save the Earth, as his outer layer of don't know what came off, his human body was of KR. This started the race for Helen to understand why Klaatu was here and what does he want.

The hilarous part was when Klaatu met someone, seemingly one of them in a Mcdonald restaurant. A chinese guy, then they started talking in chinese, kaoz ... wonder what was that for ? Sound so wierd as chinese came out of KR's mouth. Even more hiong ... after a while, they went back to English.

This guy was send there to evaluate and audit the inhabitants of earth. His verdict was people are too stubborn to change and this seriously hurt earth.

But ironically, he refused to leave as he was attached to here and in love with everything he had. Anyway,

Klaatu started his process of saving earth ... AKA killing every person on earth and restoring it.


But then eventually, Klaatu began to understand something, with the help of Helen. People has the highest possibility to change when on the brink of danger and also there was another side of the people on earth. It ended well but with some question marks. 7/10

Friday Dinner@Bistro 103

2nd visit here, small place but as crowded the last time we came. Menu still the same, selection not alot, the pasta are generally decent stuff at reasonable price but this time round I tried one of the meat dish. Too bad ... they do not have duck breast, haiz ... went for the kurobuta pork neck steak, simply it means black pig pork chop.



The 103 house salad quite nice, refreshing sauce all over it. The typical lettuce, raisins, croutons, shredded cheese, etc. The must try is the salt pepper calamari, abit different from the ones at 茶餐厅 or chinese restaurant. It came in cubic like pieces, very savoury and the sauce increase the overwhelming taste, good for starters.



The $27 black pig pork chop came with 2 thick pieces, fries and some vegetable. The dark sweet sauce that came with it not bad, though too little but goes well with the grilled chop, just that 2 piece seems too much. They could have reduce the price and served just one piece but maybe with more other sides.

十二月十一日, 星期四, 雨

As expected it needs to rain and spoil my plan. Even worse, I succumbed to my wants and got a espirit brownish velvety looking jacket for $70 ! And it ended with a nice dinner at waruku at KV, first time at waruku, not bad, though abit extreme on the taste bud. Paper pot beef with rice, pork cabbage omelette drenched with mayo and dark sauce, some curry beef udon ... coming up !

I chose the clear soup for my paper pot as I don't really like miso and spicy base not doing good for my crappy throat. Beef slices aren't generous but enough and with lots of vegetables. After letting the ingredients cooked, the soup started to get the taste, not bad.


The omelette also not bad, cabbage gave the crunch in each mouth but didn't really see the pork slices. My friend's curry udon's curry sauce ooze extreme taste, something different. Was too full for any desserts.

十二月十日, 星期三, 晴

This is a short working week in terms of days but in actual, hard to say. It has been slightly more than a year, not sure what is driving me but seems like there is much more left. It was another day at work, during lkps and lunch, after work ... nothing out of this world happened.

Got home around 8+ after dinner with friends and felt like trying out 兰亭序. Finally found the score, the 独奏 version too difficult, needs too much practice. I tried it out with G key, seems alright, sounds okay ... have to make it nicer.

Hope tomorrow is kind enough for me to go for a dip after work.

这一个星期一是个假日, 应该是大家所喜欢的. 拿多几天 leave 就能享受连续好几天的休息, 蛮好的. 今天是个 stay home day, 又是个雨天, 应该好好睡, 但是十点多就起来了. Somehow, 睡不着了. Wash up, make my coffee and started watching 珠光宝气, just finished episode 25 a while back.

I got my printer yesterday. Installation was quite a breeze, though initailly the setup just somehow couldn't finished and but printer was detected and I can print. But just that, printing in chinese gave some rubbish characters. Lucky, after rebooting, starting the setup completed it and that resolve the chinese printing problem.

Then was thinking, seems like I have so much things to buy ... and I don't really need any of them ! Crap ... It always the needs and wants issue. And well, mostly wants wins ... difference is how long it takes for wants to win.

Bolt

There seems to be alot of animation movies recently and coming up. Bolt is another one and yes, animal animation. Bolt was a canine adopted by Penny and later on they went on to do a TV show, Bolt, about a superdog saving the world from evil green-eyed man. And to ensure that the dog believed that what it does in the show was real, bolt was shut out from the real world. Living in a trailer and only let out around the studio when filming required.

Penny was sad that she can't live with bolt normally and during one of the episode filming where penny was captured. Bolt really thought it was real and managed to get out of the trailer. Then started his journey across the country to "save" penny, along the way came several cockanathan pigeons, Mittens, a cat bullying the pigeons and .... his #1 fan, Rhino, a hamster actually.

There was a few problem actually, biggest one was Bolt thought he still has all the powers, super strength, super bark, super stare, etc. Along the way, his delusion subsided as he started to realize and also with the help of Mittens. And this hyperactive and abit eccentric rhino spices up matters throughout the journey.

In the end, Bolt did saved Penny in real life. A fire started during an episode shoot and ironically by the replacement "bolt". Bolt returning to see Penny save her with his actual bark which was amplified through the duct. That was heard by the firemen and lead them saving Penny and Bolt. The start was abit like watching an action pack cartoon but on and off laughs did came along later on. 7/10

Saturday desserts@Canele

The chic choc was really good ... Simply a wonderful dessert. It was not something unique and expensive at $15. Chic Choc is one of canele sweet crepes offerings, not that the crepes are sweet, it is the ice cream, ingredients and condiments on it. My chic choc comes with one scoop of chocolate ice cream, dashes of warm chocolate sauces here and there, numerous meringue pieces, 4 huge pieces of chocolate shards, chocolates cookies and vanilla cream, all these on top of a big piece of crepe.


The crepe itself was done just right to golden brown though not really hot. You can just eat it alone with some maple syrup, quite nice. The chocolate ice cream was the different from the others, it was rich in chocolate but it has another taste which couldn't make out what could that be, anyway it was good. The meringue was crisp on the outside and goes well with the warm chocolate sauce.

The chocolate cookies or crumble pieces are not too overwhelming and adds another level of chocolate in this dessert. The shards are abit too much as you finished the whole thing. The vanilla cream, definitely not the usual whipped cream.

The simple hot crepes surprises as well both on taste and price. Paris ham, Emmental cheese and sunny side up. I think maybe the crepes are done nicely and with the correct ingredients, the creation was good. And also of course I like crepes !

Zack and Miri makes a Porno

This is a fun movie but you have to be able to take it as it is not R21 for nothing. Full of vulgarities, direct sexual lines, raciaism, some sex scenes and plenty organ"nic" talks, etc. So called platonic friends Zack and Miri, by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, has been living together for years and met since grade 1.

And they have a problem, upaid debts, already advanced salary and no tracking of expenses and ended up with no power and water. Then during the night when these got cut, they met a gay couple who makes porn for a living at their high school reunion. This scene was quite funny with several direct references of gay and their sexual activities.

This gave Zack an idea, they should make a porno and pay off their bills. But then they need $ and a venue to do that. Zack manage to convince his colleague at Beans and Gone to use his $ which meant for buying a plasma. And in return make him producers and enable him to see free titties.

Then they auditioned and gather some failures to act in their porno. And a guy friend to film the whole movie. The fun part starts when they try to think of storyline and title, it needs to be a spoof title of a popular movie. Finally, they decided it had to be "Star Whores" with characters like Lube Skyballer, Hung Solo, Darth Vibrator, etc.

And they rented a run down warehouse to shoot the porno, the first day went well, shooting the starting scene, with the sex themed "Star Wars" costumes and colourful vibrators mimicing the light saber. Then they mention they can shoot the sequels and prequels, The Empirass strikes back, etc.

But their luck was down as the rented warehouse was already meant to be teardown. So the whole cast was left with nothing, but since the movie is about making porno. Zack found another idea, to use his workplace as the venue, Beans and Gone is like starbucks. And because of the L employer who don't trust them, there was a camera recoding their workdays and they can use that.

So their movie changed from "Star Whores" to "Swallow Cockacino" ... ahahhahahahaa. Then the actual porno scenes starts and it get hilarous at numerous moments. But then this is still a love story in a unconventional way, Zack and Miri was supposed to film a scene as well, but with their current platonic relationship, both started to get nervous and what happened after that.

They did their scenes with laughters as well then expected they started to get edgy when they were supposed to film scenes with other casts as well. Both do not want that to happen but never say it and this dragged the movie at the end.

It was happy ending though the porno didn't gone on sale. The anal scene with constipation element was typical but funny. And we will taught what the hell was a "Dutch rider" and "Double Dutch Rider". And a search found that a dutch rider was someone who was too cheap to drive their own vehicle ... Now the co-relation starts to piece together. 8/10

Thursday Dinner@师奶茶餐厅

It was a so called timed dinner with friends before my work activity on thursday. Originally wanted to just have it at Tampines then became Katong but ended up at ECP. Not the first time here, a typical 茶餐厅 that sprouted all over Singapore for the past years.

Average food but alot of selection. I had the chicken and pork chop rice with black pepper sauce, the sauce was quite concentrated but tastewise normal. The XO carrot cake was quite good, cripsy on the outside and soft inside with just enough savouryness in each bite. The 铁板四川辣子鸡 though not bad, abit expensive, a few pieces of deep fried chicken coated with some spicy powder. Dessert was average also, my 金枝玉露 doesn't gives any kick and at $5.50, not really cheap.

十二月三日, 星期三, 晴

Wednesday are milestones of every week. It meant that you need to go through another 2 more days before you get 2 days of good rest. Rest doesn't really mean you physically or mentally shag out, although some weeks really meant that. More like you get extended time to do what you like to do ... but if your top favourite thing to do is work then that does not apply to you.

Today weather was good so went for a dip after work. There was some people but still alright, swim was enjoyable. Then we head to Bedok Market Place for damn late dinner, been very long since I was there. It was crowded but still have seats, the "usher" looked out for you even when you are 5,414,656,878 km away.

When you are seated, 4 or 5 people starts asking you for orders. Good thing are stalls are open 24 hours. The cheese prata not bad, crispy and not too oily. The roti john also quite good and at $4, consider cheap for such outlets. Stingray and satay so so, average stuff.

zzzZZZZzzz ... but think I will play RTK for a while !
